BRIEF HISTORY:

The first Catholic Missionaries in the area were Holy Ghost Fathers from Kabaa, who opened a Primary School in Museve in 1939. They opened resident Missions at Mutune (1945), Muthale (1948) and Ikanga (1956). In the northern part of the District, the Consolata Fathers from Meru Opened a resident Mission at Kimangao in 1954. In October, 1956, the whole District of Kitui was made Prefecture Apostolic, and entrusted to St. Patrick’s Missionary Society. It became a Diocese on 16th November, 1963.
It comprises of Kitui and Mwingi districts
