BRIEF HISTORY:
The diocese of Kakamega is situated in Western Province of Kenya.

The area was first evangelized by the Mill Hill Fathers. The first parish was established at Mumias in 1904. The Diocese of Kakamega was originally part of the Diocese of Kisumu under the jurisdiction of Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti. On February 27th 1978, the Diocese of Kisumu was divided and the Diocese of Kakamega was created. The Diocese of Kisumu fell under the jurisdiction of Rt. Rev. Zachaeus Okoth while the Diocese of Kakamega came under the jurisdiction of Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti. The Diocese of Kakamega at that time comprised three districts: Busia, Bungoma and Kakamega.
On 27th April, 1987, the Diocese of Bungoma was created from the split of the Diocese of Kakamega. The Diocese of Bungoma came under the jurisdiction of the late Bishop Longnus Atundo while that of Kakamega remained under the jurisdiction of Bishop Philip Sulumeti.

The Diocese of Kakamega covers the districts of Kakamega, Vihiga and Lugari.
