BRIEF HISTORY

The Diocese of Embu is in Eastern Kenya and covers the political boundaries of Embu and Mbeere districts, the latter is largely semi-arid.

Embu diocese was split form the diocese of Meru in 1986. By then there were 10 parishes. The area was first evangelized by the Consolata Missioaries in the 1920's. First Ordinary, consecrated on September 20, 1986 was Rt. Rev. John Njue. Since May 18, 2002. On October 13, 2003, Rev. Fr. Anthony Muheria, a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei, was appointed as the Bishop of the Diocese of Embu. He became the Diocese's Apostolic Administrator on August 9th, 2008. On May 9th, 2009, Rev. Fr. Paul Kariuki Njiru was appointed the third Bishop of the Diocese.

Felician and Augustinian sisters in Embu and Ishiara parishes have established formation houses within the diocese.
