BRIEF HISTORY:

The Catholic Diocese of Eldoret is situated in the RIft Valley Province of Kenya. It is on the Western side of hte Great Rift Valley. It straddles the Equator. THis area is mainly highland at 1,500 meters above sea-level but has some lowlands set on approximately 8,000 square kilometres.

The Prefecture Apostolic of Eldoret was created in 1954. It became a Diocese in October 1959 with the late Rt. Rev. Joseph Houlihan of St. Patrick’s Missionary Society as its first Bishop. Prior to this it was part of Kisumu Diocese.

The Area covered by the new Diocese comprised of the present Dioceses of Eldoret, Nakuru, Kericho and Lodwar. In 1968 Nakuru (with Kericho added) became a Diocese. Nandi District was added to Eldoret in 1975.

The Rt. Rev. John Njenga was consecrated Bishop of Eldoret in 1970 and when he was appointed the Bishop of Mombasa in 1988, the Diocese was administered by Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Smith until June 1990 when Rt. Rev. Cornelius Kipng’eno arap Korir was consecrated Bishop of Eldoret.

The first Missionary Priests to work in the Diocese were from Mill Hill Society. They built the first Catholic Church in Eldoret (St. John Baptist) in 1929. They also opened other Missions like Tartar in West Pokot, Kiminini in Trans Nzoia, Nerkwo in Keiyo Marakwet and Chepterit in Nandi in the 1940s. St Patrick’s Missionaries came in 1952. The first Diocesan Priest was Ordained in 1972.
