Brief History:
When Kenya became independent  in 1963, the Government of the Republic of Kenya decided to continue wIth the British tradition of having religion in the Army and in the other two new services, namely, the Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy.

Fr. Francis Maher of the Mill Hill Missionaries became the first Catholic chaplain. He helped to form the Catholic Church (Roman Catholic) Chaplaincy Department. He was also involved in the appointment of the first Bishop-in-ordinary to Kenya Armed Forces in the person of Bishop Maunce Otunga, the Bishop of Kisii by then, now the Cardinal and Retired Archbishop of Nairobi.

Fr. Francis Ng’anga of Nyeri became the first African Military Chaplain in 1963 followed by John Auro of Kisii in 1965. Appointment of other African Chaplains and catechists followed. Parish Pastoral Councils and Legion of Mary groups were established. Church buildings were erected purely on “Harambee”s basis.

On 24 J anuary , 1981, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II established the Military Ordinariate in Kenya. This is equivalent to a diocese. It was registered by the Government of Kenya on 15 December, 1986.

From its inception, it was placed under the care of the Late Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga when he was the auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu up to the itme the Military Ordinariate was given a uniformed Bishop in the person of His Lordship Alfred Kipkoech Rotich. 

Bishop Alfred Rotich was the auxiliary Of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. In September, 1997, the Holy Father granted the Military Ordinariate a status of autonomous Diocese and his Lordship Bishop Alfred.K Rotich was made its ordinary.
Military Ordinariate covers the whole country where there are Kenyan soldiers and also outside the country.
