OUR LADY OF CONSOLATION CATHEDRAL

The Catholic Diocese of Garissa was established by H.H. Pope John Paul II on February 3, 1984.  It comprises the entrire North Eastern Province and two districts from the Coast Province: Tana River and Lamu.

The first evangelization in the Diocese goes back ot the last part of the 16th century.  It was the work of the Portuguese Augustinian Missionaries in Faza, on the island of Pate, and in Lamu.  In 1968, the Consolata Missionaries from Meru started to work in Garissa form where they moved to Wajir and Mandera.  In 1973, evangelization in the area was entrusted to the Capuchin Friars of the Province of Malta.  In 1976, the territory which formed part of Mombasa and Meru diocese was declared a Prefecture Apostolic, with Fr. Leo WHite OFM Cap as its first Apostolic Prefect, and elevated to diocese in 1984.  In the year 2000, the southern part of Garissa diocese: Wema, Garsen, Mpeketoni and Lamu was detached from the diocese to form part, together with Malindi, the new diocese of Malindi

On February 3, 1984, Rt. Rev. Paul Darmanin took over form Rt. Rev. Msgr. Leo White who resigned in 1984.

The Consolata Missionaries founded Our Lady of Consolata Parish in 1968. In 1974 the parish was handed over to the Capuchin Friars Minor. When Garissa became diocese in 1984, the Church became the Cathedral of the new diocese. The parish is around 50kms sq. with 1,500 Catholics from a population of over 200,000 most of whom are Somalis. In the year 2003, the Diocesan Priests took over the Parish.
