BRIEF HISTORY:

Nakuru diocese is located in Rift Valley Province, Kenya. It was once a part of the ecclesiastical territory of the Vicariate of the Upper Nile. In 1928, the first mission was opended at Nakuru. However at the time, the area now covered by the diocese was occupied by white settlers, migrant laorers, and by by the local communities.

The mobility of the African population limited progress of evangelisation within the white settled areas referred to as "White Highlands". In the reserves, the conservative attitudes of the Kalenjin people coupled with resistance from other Christian Missionaries made evangelisation extremely difficult.

With the commissioning of the Beecher report in 1949, the then Government needed assistance to immediately facilitate the expansion of primary education and in the management of schools. The Catholic Missionaries seized up the opportunity. THis is turn created a break-through for evangelisation in the area. As expected, the schools under Catholic management grew in numbers with corresponding increases in catechumen. The development gave Catholc Missionaries the first opportunity to begin Evangelisaiton on a wider basis in the area.

Nakuru Diocese was created on January 11th, 1968.Nakuru and Baringo Districts were taken from the Diocese of Eldoret, Kericho District from the Diocese of Kisumu and a very small area from the Archdiocese of Nairobi. The new Diocese was originally given in the pastoral care of St. Patrick’s Missionaries, who worked hand in hand with the Mill Hill Fathers. They were later joined by the Comboni Fathers, then by the Spiritan Fathers; later still by the Franscan Friars and by the Contemplative Evangelisers of the Heart of Christ. Diocesan Priests, now and for some years, outnumber all other groups by a wide margin. Since 1995, when the Diocese of Kericho was created, the Diocese comprises of Nakuru, Baringo and Koibatek Districts.
